Dealing with Weeds
Weed Killer (not strictly allowed)
If your plot is really overgrown and covered with rubbish, it might be the best option.
Please be careful how you use this as some new-comers have got off to a bad start by killing the neighbours beans due to wind drift. Make sure you read the instructions carefully. It will take a few weeks and possibly several applications. There is no guarantee that weed killer will kill Horse tail/Mare's tail.
Flame gun
A flame gun is particulaly useful for disposing of weeds that have already gone to seed. Burn off the top vegetation with the flame gun and then cover with a weed supressing mulch or dig thoroughly. To deal with perennial roots, see our information on weeds.
Strimming
Strim off the surface vegetation and then cover the area with a weed supressing mulch or dig thoroughly. To deal with perenial roots, see our information on weeds.
Rotovating
Get rid of all perenial weed roots before you think of rotovating see our information on weeds above. A rotavator will chop up any roots in to small pieces and you'll have hundreds more weeds to deal with! Annual weeds such as groundsel and shepherds purse can be rotovated.
Disposing of weeds
If you have weeds that have already gone to seed, they need to be removed from the site as weed seeds can remain dormant for many years, ideally these would be burnt on a bonfire, but bonfires are not allowed. If you have any of the perenial weeds listed on our weeds page they can be dried, put in a heavy duty plastic sacks with the tops tied.
The sacks can either be left for two to three years or removed from the site (you can dispose of them using your green bin or the green waste skip near the leisure centre). Any other weeds can be composted
